Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products That Actually Work
Why 'eco-friendly' so often means 'compromise'
Ask most people about sustainable cleaning products and you'll hear a familiar complaint: they smell faintly of nothing, they take twice as long to work, and they still leave a film on the glass. That reputation isn't entirely undeserved — a lot of early 'green' formulations were diluted to the point of uselessness.
The category has moved on considerably. Modern plant-derived surfactants, enzyme-based degreasers and mineral-based abrasives now match — and in several categories exceed — the performance of conventional chemical cleaners, without the same load of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or aquatic toxicity.
What we actually look for in a product
Every product on our trolley is assessed against four criteria: biodegradability, VOC content, packaging, and — the one that matters most day to day — genuine cleaning performance on the surfaces we encounter most often: natural stone, hardwood, stainless steel and glass.
Certifications help narrow the field (we favour Ecocert and EU Ecolabel-listed formulations), but certification alone isn't proof of performance. We trial every product on real surfaces before it enters rotation, and anything that requires a second or third pass to match a conventional cleaner gets dropped.
Where sustainability and results actually align
Enzyme-based cleaners are the clearest win: they break down organic soiling (grease, food residue, biological staining) at the molecular level rather than simply dissolving or masking it, which means better results on fabric upholstery and grout without abrasive scrubbing.
For hard surfaces, pH-balanced, plant-derived degreasers now perform comparably to ammonia-based products on stainless steel and glass, with none of the residual fumes — a meaningful difference in enclosed kitchens and offices.
The honest exception is heavy-duty descaling and mould treatment, where some conventional formulations still have an edge. We use the most targeted, lowest-impact option available for these specific tasks rather than pretending a general-purpose eco product can do everything.
